Pohela Boishakh | Bengali New Year
শুভ নববর্ষ !
BAFA hosts a two-part Bengali New Year celebration every year in both Queens and the Bronx. It begins with a colorful parade, followed by a vibrant performing arts program featuring music, dance, and poetry. More than just a celebration, it strengthens cultural identity, builds community pride, and keeps traditions alive for future generations.
Bengali New Year, or Pohela Boishakh, is a vibrant celebration marking the first day of the Bengali calendar, typically observed on April 14th or 15th. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, it is a time of renewal, unity, and cultural pride for Bengalis across the world. Streets come alive with colorful processions like the Mangal Shobhajatra, music, and traditional dance, while people dress in festive attire—often red and white—and gather to enjoy classic foods like panta bhaat, hilsa fish, and sweets. It's a moment when communities come together in joyous harmony, honoring heritage through poetry, folk art, and song. Beyond the festivities, Pohela Boishakh holds deeper meaning as a symbol of hope and new beginnings, embracing both the richness of the past and the promise of the future.
